Sri Sri Ravi Shankar : The story of Madhu Kaitab

Before entering silence as he does during Navaratri, Sri Sri said that we'll be sharing stories from the Devi Bhagavat, which are actually riddles carrying a deeper meaning. Go through the story and see what message you are able to take out from it. Today's story is about the demons Madhu Kaitab:

Once Lord Vishnu was resting on water when from the wax in his ears, two demons Madhu and Kaitab were born. Both of them were very powerful and caused a lot of disruption. They even challenged Lord Brahma to war. Brahma pleaded with Vishnu for help. Vishnu fought with them for thousands of years but was not able to defeat them. He then worshipped Mother Divine and with Her blessing, was able to kill Madhu and Kaitab.

Questions to ponder:
1. What does the demons' birth from Vishnu's ear wax signify?
2. Why was he not able to defeat them?
3. What does the blessing of Mother Divine signify, with which Vishu was able to win the war?

Meaning of the Madhu Kaitab story:

Often we develop cravings and aversions (Madhu and Kaitab) towards things that we hear about - 'So and so got a car, I also want it', 'I heard she said this about me, I won't talk to her' etc. You can go on fighting craving and aversions for years and yet not get over them. The mind cannot win over what is born out of the mind. One needs to invoke the Spiritual Energy to go past these distortions.
